World Cup goes to South Africa
South Africa will host the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
It will be the first time that the cup has been held in Africa, while South Africa overcame finalist rivals Morocco with 14 votes to 10 – the third candidate, Egypt, failed to receive any.
Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) president, Joseph Blatter, announced the result of the vote on 15 May in Zurich.
Earlier, FIFA had also made the unprecedented decision to rotate the hosting venue, ensuring that the games would be held in Africa.
The result of the vote ends an 18-month process that saw six countries bid for the games – Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa and Tunisia.
The change in FIFA policy and the introduction of the rotation system will see the 2014 World Cup held in South America for the seventh time in history. Details: www.fifa.com
