Youngsters offered inroads to industry
London-based charity Bromley Mytime is helping young school leavers to start a career in leisure through a joint partnership with Orpington and London Leisure colleges.
Fourteen young students from the area have joined a two year course, called FC Leisure, which provides an introduction to working in the leisure industry – including customer care, fitness instructing, life-guarding, first aid and sports leadership.
Students are also able to benefit from work placements at sports centres and outreach programmes to gain valuable experience.
Bob Neill member of parliament for Bromley and Chislehurst, said, “It’s wonderful to see Bromley’s young school leavers showing such a commitment to developing their own careers in leisure. I expect demand for leisure to continue to grow as more people discover the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle”.
Dennis Barkway ,Chairman of Bromley Mytime, said “Leisure is a people business but all too often new recruits don’t have the skills we need. I’m delighted that in working alongside Orpington and London Leisure Colleges we’re much more likely to get the skills sets we need to run a successful customer facing business.”
The course started in September and the first students are expected to complete their first level qualifications next summer. Applications for the 2007-8 cohort will be sought in the spring. Details: www.bromleymytime.org.uk
