Final plans for the £110m Bluestone holiday village in Pembrokeshire, West Wales, have been unveiled.

The one million sq ft (92,900sq m) centre, set in 500 acres, will be built around a central village with a water park and snow centre as well as a health spa and sports club. There will be 335 log cabins, 30 two-bedroom terraced cottages and 30 open plan studio apartments.

Alfred McAlpine is the contractor for the project, which was designed by architects Powell Dobson in conjunction with Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and Pembrokeshire County Council.

The scheme will receive £14.5m from the Welsh Assembly and a further £4m from Finance Wales as well as a £41m funding package from Mansford Holdings and Bank of Scotland. Further funding will be provided by equity investors, including Bluestone chief executive William McNamara.

McNamara said: “The launch of Bluestone today is the culmination of 10 years of work. We set out to create a new direction for tourism in Wales within Pembrokeshire.”

The project was opposed by locals who were apprehensive about the scheme’s encroachment on the national park, but McNamara said: “We do not take our responsibility lightly. We aim to deliver a new generation of eco-tourism with sustainable development principles at its core.”

The first phase of construction – which will begin in the coming weeks – will comprise the log cabins and the 43,000sq ft (4,000sq m) indoor water park, and is due for completion in June 2008. Work on phase two is expected to begin in 2009.
