£1.5m revamp for Leeds Art Gallery
Leeds Art Gallery is set to close on 26 November for a £1.5m refurbishment.
The revamp will create a new exhibition gallery, a learning space for children and families and improved access for people with disabilities.
The project will also reinstate an historic connecting archway linking the gallery with the adjoining Central Library, so that visitors can move between the two buildings.
The restored archway will reopen the Victorian Tiled Hall – closed to the public for more than 50 years – which will comprise a new shop, café, ICT area and seating.
The gallery will reopen in May 2007, but the library will remain open throughout the construction period.
Regional Development Agency Yorkshire Forward is providing £1.2m in funding, with the remainder being invested by Leeds City Council. Details: www.leeds.gov.uk
