£80m mixed-use scheme for Dorchester
The historic Roman baths at Dorchester, UK, could be turned into a visitor attraction as part of an £80m mixed-use redevelopment of the Charles Street car park in the town centre.
West Dorset District Council decided on 13 September to appoint construction group Simons as the preferred developer for the project, which could also include other leisure elements.
Speaking about the possibility of adding a visitor centre to the scheme, development director at Simons, Mark Lewis, said: “Dorchester is desperately rich in terms of archaeology, particularly the Roman period. A visitor centre would strengthen the quality of the town as a destination.”
A public consultation on the design of the scheme will take place in the first half of 2007. Details: www.simonsgroup.com
