£850,000 revamp for Berwick leisure centre
Construction work has started on a £850,000 redevelopment of the Swan Centre for Leisure in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, which is to be delivered in three stages.
The first phase of the scheme, which is being managed by operator Tees Active, will see Createability convert an existing 500sq m (5,382sq ft) soft play area into a new 65-station gym equipped with Technogym cv and resistance equipment. Scheduled for completion by January 2010, stage one also includes a new 800sq m (8,611sq ft) spinning studio, a refurbished coffee area and upgraded changing facilities.
Alliance Leisure is also involved with the project, which will see the second stage get underway in early 2010 to create a new soft play area by Wrexham-based SPI Play. Phase three is planned for spring 2010 and will see the reception area and offices revamped. Tees Active managing director Steven Chaytor said: "We wanted to create a modern health and fitness environment that will help sustain and build upon the commercial aspects of the whole facility.
"The gym was too small and the equipment was old and as both locals and summer tourists use the facility, it was essential that we realigned the offering to provide both a high standard of fitness facilities and children's play area." Ian Cotgave, managing director of Createability, added: "The site was in great need of updating and the work will not only bring the centre into the 21st century but will also help to establish the Swan Leisure Centre as an indoor destination for holiday makers in the area."
