£9m community facility to open in Hamilton this summer
The £9m Fairhill Integrated Community Facility in Hamilton, Scotland, is due to open by the end of the summer.
The centre—to be owned and managed by the South Lanarkshire Council—will replace the Fairhill Civic Centre, which was demolished in 2006 to make way for the new facility.
The Community Regeneration Partnership has granted £850,000 towards the facility, while the European Regional Development Fund has contributed £816,000. South Lanarkshire Council will cover the remaining cost.
Fitness equipment suppliers HUR and Cybex will furnish two fitness suites with cardiovascular and weight equipment for users of all abilities, and the suites will be among the first in the UK to incorporate Stage 2 accredited IFI equipment.
One suite will be geared towards adults, with equipment suitable for users with a physical disability, and the second will be equipped for children and youth.
A spokesperson for Cybex added: “[The centre] is an example of good practice that achieves the primary objective of inclusive fitness—making equipment work in mainstream facilities.”
The integrated facility will also include a flexible activity/dance studio that can be subdivided for different uses, male and female changing areas, a new library and a youth/general purpose area.
A café, multipurpose meeting rooms for visiting services such as physiotherapy, disabled daycare services, a glass-screened garden, and a new community hall with state of the art sound and lighting systems are also planned.
