The Heritage Lottery Fund has announced a round of grants, each worth over £5m, to communities across the UK for the preservation of wildlife habitats, parkland and historic urban landscapes and industrial sites.

Liz Forgan, chair of the Heritage Lottery Fund said the projects will have a tremendous impact on people's lives: 'They reflect our commitment to safeguarding treasures of all kinds from the past which have meaning and value for people today.

'By breathing new life into them with money from the National Lottery, we can make sure they are here to be enjoyed by as many people as possible for years to come.'

Communities to benefit include Kelvingrove's New Century project in Glasgow - a £12.7m grant has been given to the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery and the SS Great Britain Project Bristol - the SS Great Britain will be restored and opened to visitors as the centre piece of the Great Western dockyard with a grant of nearly £8m.

To date, the HLF has awarded 8,108 grants with a total value of over £1.8bn.
