£10m upgrade for London's 'green' routes

A £10m renovation of London's cycling and walking networks in time for the 2012 Games, which has spanned more than 110 individual schemes, has been officially unveiled.

Transport for London has overhauled 75km (47 miles) of cycle routes as part of the scheme, which was conceived by Sustrans and funded by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA).

The 113 individual projects have helped to upgrade eight routes around the Olympic Park and other venues, which form part of the wider London Greenways network.

It is anticipated that an additional 1 million trips will be made by foot and bike each day while the Games take place next summer, with 300,000 spectators using the routes to get to events.

The unveiling of the £10m worth of improvements has coincided with the launch of the new London 2012 Active Travel drive, which will increase the number of walkers and cyclists.

More than 50 projects are expected to encourage more people to consider travelling by foot or by bicycle, not only during the Games, but before and after as well.

ODA director of transport Hugh Sumner said: "There has been a significant investment made by the ODA and its partners to ensure that London 2012 is truly a sustainable transport Games.

"We have worked together to deliver major improvements across London's cycling and walking routes so that spectators can get to venues safely and on time."
