A Kickstarter campaign is underway to fund a fully automated wearable nutrition tracker which takes photos of food and calculates its calorific and nutritional values.

The Drop is the brainchild of Rex.fit, founded by Rangel Milushev and Ahmad Roumie, who have backgrounds in AI and computer vision from Harvard and ETH Zurich respectively.

Worn around the neck as a pendant, or attached to clothing via a magnetic clasp, The Drop uses advanced computer vision and AI to automatically detect food intake without the need for manual entry.

It takes photos at regular intervals that are processed on the device by a smart AI chip and deleted immediately after. If food or drink are detected, the smart 4K AI camera captures more images to analyse the user's interactions, then transfers these photos to the user’s phone and syncs them with the cloud for further analysis. The user receives an accurate reading of calories, proteins, carbs and fats.

"We aim to create a new category of wearables – nutrition trackers – similar to fitness trackers and smartwatches," says Milushev. "Our vision is to empower users to effortlessly take control of their nutrition and health.”

The inventors says the device’s estimations are on par with a nutritionist, ensuring users receive reliable data about their food intake. The Drop includes an AI assistant that offers personalised recipes, meal plans and workout recommendations, enhancing the overall user.

To prevent people from setting a calorie target which is too low, there is a minimum calorie target for age, gender and activity level. “We don't encourage anorexic behavior or obsessive calorie tracking,” says Milushev.

“Rex is an AI nutrition coach that is programmed to nurture a healthy relationship with food. We also position ourselves as more "nutrition" tracking than "calorie" tracking, encouraging users to build a relationship with food that prioritises holistic wellbeing and supports long-term wellness."

The Drop is a progression of the company’s Nutribot which also tracked nutrition but required manual entry, which many users forgot to do.

Rex.fit’s long-term goal is to bring all tracking data together, empowering users to monitor nutrition, workouts, sleep and overall wellness from a single app.

The starting price is US$199 and comes with a lifetime subscription of the Rex app. Pre-orders are open globally, with the first shipments expected in Q4 of 2025.
