10-year milestone for free museum scheme
The Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) policy of providing free entry to the UK's national museums will reach its 10-year milestone tomorrow (1 December).
Established under the previous Labour-led administration, the policy has been continued by the coalition government and safeguarded in the Comprehensive Spending Review.
Since the introduction of the policy, DCMS-sponsored attractions in London have reported a 151 per cent increase in visitor numbers, while other sites posted a 148 per cent growth.
Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "Our free museums and galleries ensure that culture is for everyone, not just the lucky few."
