2012 canoe venue plans move on
The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is moving forward with plans for a new whitewater canoe slalom course at Broxbourne in Hertfordshire which will act as a host venue for the 2012 Games.
A consultancy team has now been appointed to develop the masterplan studies.
The site for the facility is on land next to Broxbourne railway station, which is owned by the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA).
Chief executive of the British Canoe Union (BCU), Paul Owen, said: “This venue will lead to a new era in canoeing and help broaden the appeal of the sport.”
Shaun Dawson, chief executive of LVRPA added: “This world class regional sports and leisure facility will open up the Spitalbrook site for the first time in 100 years.”
The ODA is working in partnership with the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA), the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and the BCU to deliver the course, which will be completed in time for a 2011 test event.
