Aberdeen Science Centre is to undergo a £4.7m (US$6m, €5.1m) revamp, which will double existing exhibition space at the Museum.

Located near the city's seafront, the former Stratosphere Science Centre is in need of renewal, with plans including development of a new upper floor to the building.

According to the science centre, the Redevelopment is being create with young people in mind, with the revamped institution designed to get more young people interested in STEM subjects.

To finance construction, £1m (US$1.3m, €1.1m) is being sought from Aberdeen City Council for the regeneration. Remaining funding will be sourced through a combination of charitable donations and external financiers.

Liz Hodge, chief executive of the Centre, said that the proposed redevelopment will "create a science centre that is fit for the 21st century."

“It’s a very old building and in need of some TLC," she said, speaking to The Evening Express. “We want it to be brighter, lighter and much more stimulating."

Work is expected to begin in September 2018 and will take approximately a year to complete. During this 12 month period, the science will need to relocate, though the location is still to be determined.
