Anti-social behaviour could lead to parks ban in Glasgow
New legislation has come into force in Glasgow which could see people who behave anti-socially banned from the city’s parks and open spaces.
Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Police have unveiled the move, which allows park rangers, the police and the council’s community relations unit to share information and identify those causing problems in parks.
Offences include gang fighting, drinking, vandalism, begging and littering. Repeat offenders will be targeted by applying for exclusion order which could be in place for up to a year.
The new strategy came about following consultation with community groups associated with Kelvingrove Park, who were worried about safety and amenity in the park.
Councillor Aileen Colleran, executive member for parks and facilities, said: “This is a major step forward in tackling anti-social behaviour. This initiative provides real integration of approach with the police, Park Rangers, community relations and the public all contributing.
“Linked communication and shared information means all the agencies involved in tackling anti-social behaviour can pull their resources with a clear objective - if people don't modify their behaviour, they face exclusion from a park, while further infringements would lead to criminal charges."
Superindendent Fiona McPherson, added: "Consistency is the key issue when tackling anti-social behaviour. The police and council are committed to this work and we will monitor its effectiveness closely. We want to ensure parks are safe and that people can use them without fear of intimidation.”
Park rangers are to be trained in conflict management and evidence gathering techniques. Details: www.glasgow.gov.uk
