A new £9m sports complex is to be unveiled by the University of York (UY) and the City of York Council (CYC) near the Grimston Bar Park and Ride site in August.

Sir Robert McAlpine has been the contractor tasked with building York Sport Village, which was designed by Space Architects and will include a 120-station fitness suite. Technogym and Schwinn have supplied equipment.

Three studios for dance, group cycling and aerobics; a competition-standard eight-lane, 25m swimming pool; a learner pool; and a sauna and steamrooms are also among the facilities.

A second stage of development at York Sport Village is due to commence next year and will include the provision of an athletics park and a 1km (0.6-mile) outdoor road cycling circuit.

UY has contributed £5m towards the development, while CYC has provided £3m. The rest of the funding has been secured through grants - including support from Sport England.

Professor Brian Cantor, vice-chancellor of the university, said: "York Sport Village will be a superb sporting asset for everyone in the city.

"Our sports and recreational facilities for students, staff and the community are already outstanding, and York Sport Village will take them to an even higher level."

CYC cabinet member for leisure, culture and social inclusion Sonja Crisp added: "York Sport Village will provide a state of the art facility for residents across the city in this, an Olympic year."
