Australia’s Queensland Art Gallery appoints new director
Australia’s Queensland Art Gallery, in Brisbane, has appointed Chris Saines as its new director.
Australian-born Saines, who will take up his new role on 29 April 2013, has 30 years’ experience working in public art institutions in Australia and New Zealand and has been director of the Auckland Art Gallery since 1996.
During his tenure at the New Zealand gallery he led a NZ$121m (US$102.18m, 77.60m euro, £63.07m) building development and in 2009 negotiated a 15-work promised gift from American philanthropists Julian and Josie Robertson valued at NZ$115m (US$97.11m, 73.75m euro, £59.94m).
Saines was recognised in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to the arts.
A recruitment process will begin shortly for a new Auckland Art Gallery director.
