BW forced to shut canal for repair work
British Waterways (BW) has revealed that a section of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal has been forced to shut to allow engineers to undertake repairs to a leaking bed.
The section between Bridges 116 and 118 at Llangattock, Powys, is set to remain closed until 17 March to enable work to be carried out immediately to avoid further disruption at the start of the visitor season in early March. BW has confirmed that the northern section of the canal remains open to offer two days of cruising for boat owners, while water levels downstream of bridge 116 to Five Locks is set to be up to 150mm lower while work is carried out.
Waterway manager Nick Worthington said: "We are aware that this will impact on the first week of the visitor season and apologise for any disruption to people's holiday plans while we carry out these essential repairs. "We have contacted all the affected hire boat operators and will ensure everyone is kept informed as work progresses."
