European affordable fitness giant, Basic-Fit – which is known for its low staffing levels – has designed AI personas to act as personal workout buddies to offer encouragement and celebrate victories.

From 1 September, Fitbuddies will be available in the Basic-Fit app for users in the Netherlands. The aim is to provide an accessible solution to intelligently guide exercise habits, ensuring people aren't left to fend for themselves. They will kick in at the point when most people lose momentum – usually at around four to six weeks – to help them move forward.

“When you start working out, it's often your mind that offers more resistance than your body,” says Erica van Vonderen-Hahn, chief commercial officer at Basic-Fit . "Fitbuddies provide that little bit of extra encouragement at the right time. They're there for you, not to push you, but to support you. Because working out together helps you keep going. We actively monitor for bias, focus on inclusivity and don't focus on appearance, but on feeling and feasibility.”

Based on behavioural data and interactions in the Basic-Fit app from 4.4 million members, five Fitbuddies have been designed, each with a distinctive personality.

Glow is calming, empathetic and helps with peace and focus.

Power is energetic and motivating, aimed at those who want to take action.

Tailored to people with physical disabilities, Strive helps users discover workout options suitable for their needs and to inspire them with feasible alternatives.

Vibe is positive, playful and fun.

Energy is results-driven and always cheerful and encouraging.

Basic-Fit says Fitbuddies don't listen in via camera or microphone and don't store sensitive information.
