Boost for Wandsworth sports facilities
Wandsworth Council is to invest £100,000 in the borough's sports facilities.
The improvements will include the refurbishment of the athletics facilities at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park and the creation of an international-standard beach volleyball courts at the Barn Elms sports centre.
Sand from the beach volleyball tournament at the London 2012 Games is being used at Barn Elms as part of a strategy to reuse the specially-produced playing surface.
The £45,000 cost of introducing beach volleyball court has been met in full by a grant from Volleyball England, following a successful funding application to Sport England.
When volleyball is not being played the courts will also be available for other beach sports events like beach soccer, tag rugby, beach ultimate frisbee and footvolley.
