Boost for West Ham's Olympic Stadium bid
West Ham United Football Club's (WHUFC) bid to relocate to the Olympic Stadium following the 2012 Games has received the backing of Westfield Stratford City.
The Australia-based group is behind plans for a major retail-led project at the East London site, and director John Burton told the London Assembly that it was working with the club and Newham Council on the proposals. According to the Guardian, Burton told the economic development, culture, sport and tourism committee that Westfield Stratford City "will work with West Ham or anyone else for that matter in the delivery of a further use."
WHUFC's plan to move to the Olympic Stadium site is one of a number of prospective bidders looking to take over the venue after the 2012 Games, with O2 Arena operator AEG also interested. However, the BBC revealed that Tottenham Hotspur Football Club (THFC) could also be set to enter the race after reportedly holding "informal talks" with the Olympic Park Legacy Company.
The Premier League club is currently working on plans for a new 56,000-seat stadium next to its current White Hart Lane venue in North London, but has encountered opposition from a number of groups. A THFC spokesperson told the broadcaster that it had not submitted a bid to take over the venue and "all things proceeding well with our current plans to build a new stadium within Tottenham, we see no need to".
