Eighty talented young British swimmers have been invited to a four-day camp to give them the experience of being in a national squad environment ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Hosted by swimming'>British Swimming at the Aberdeen Sports Village, 40 females aged 14-17 and 40 males aged 15-18 from England, Scotland and Wales will be split into gender and stroke-specific groups to provide them the opportunity to train together.

Athletes chosen to take part will be selected during the British Summer Championships in July. Once selected, the camp will take place between 15 and 18 September. The initiative has been developed in collaboration with the home nations, the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA), Scottish Swimming and Swim Wales.

“This is the first time in a long period that we have embarked on bringing such a large group of junior swimmers together for one consolidated camp,” said Tim Jones, British Swimming’s head of performance pathway.

“At the start of the Tokyo cycle it is a great opportunity to be as inclusive as possible with a group of athletes who potentially see the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games as longer-term goals.”

The technical focus of the four days will be around starting and turning skills. The camp will also include athlete profiling and education sessions, with selected swimmers working with some of the nation’s leading coaches.
