Calderdale centres set for autumn opening
Calderdale Council has announced that two new swimming pools and fitness facilities at Brighouse and Sowerby Bridge are due to open on 25 October and 22 November respectively.
The £10.5m project - designed by Saunders Boston and delivered by contractor Willmott Dixon - has been part-funded by the sale of Leeds-Bradford International Airport in 2007. Both of the new centres will include a 25m, six-lane swimming pool; a learner pool and a fitness suite, as well as a dance studio. The project is part of the council's wider bid to replace existing local facilities.
Although the scheme was affected by severe weather conditions at the start of the year, the council's safer and stronger communities scrutiny panel has heard that the developments are on time and on budget. The new Brighouse facility will be handed over to Calderdale Council on 11 October ahead of its scheduled 25 October opening date, while Sowerby Bridge's new pool will be handed over on 25 October before opening on 22 November.
Ian Cooper, chair of the safer and stronger communities scrutiny panel, said: "We are pleased to learn that the building projects for Calderdale's brand new leisure centres are running smoothly." Image: An artist's impression of the new Brighouse facility
