Chester scheme to commence in 2014
Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWCC) has revealed that work is to get underway on the city's Northgate Project in spring 2014.
Members of the executive committee approved a new timetable for the development, along with financial and legal guidelines to adopt a new contract with developer ING. The retail-led scheme will include restaurants, cafés, bars and a range of other leisure facilities, although a consultation is due to be held in autumn 2011 before any plans are submitted.
It is hoped that feedback from the consultation and results from a study by the Urban Land Institute will help guide a masterplan for the scheme and lead to a full planning application. CWCC leader Mike Jones said: "While progress on this vital scheme has been slow, it is a significant sign of Chester's enduring attraction that we have a developer prepared to invest at a time when many other such proposed schemes in different parts of the country have either been abandoned or at a standstill."
A spokesperson for ING added: "We look forward to working in partnership with the council and stakeholders to deliver a retail-led scheme for the Northgate."
