City boatyard set for new lease of life
British Waterways (BW) has unveiled new plans for the regeneration of the historic Taylor's Boatyard, which is situated in the Chester Canal Basin on the Shropshire Union Canal.
It is hoped that the restoration of the Grade II-listed buildings at the 0.5-acre (0.2-hectare) site will play a central role in the preservation of Chester's heritage, while also becoming a commercially viable enterprise in its own right. The boatyard complex currently includes a series of main workshops and a brick foundry, a joinery workshop, covered and canalside work areas and a dry dock area, and formerly employed more than 200 people to service a large fleet of working canal vessels.
BW hopes to obtain funding for the scheme provided a suitable commercial partnership can be established, with plans for the site including the provision of traditional boat craft and repair facilities, as well as moorings.
