Council to acquire athletes' village site
Glasgow City Council is to complete the acquisition of the proposed site for the athletes' village of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The council's executive committee approved plans to acquire the land from Springfield Properties at a cost of £17m, resulting in the council having near full ownership of the entire Games Village Site.
Councillor Archie Graham, executive member for Commonwealth Games delivery at the Glasgow City Council, said: "The acquisition of this crucial piece of land is one of the last pieces in the jigsaw in term of preparing to build the Commonwealth Games Athletes' Village and is a good investment for the city."
The land purchases are part of the council's Commonwealth Games strategy, as outlined in the candidate city file that the city submitted when bidding for the games. In the strategy, the council committed itself to acquiring the athletes' village site to ensure that all developments are free from any title encumbrances and title defects.
