Cwmbran leisure closure
Fairwater Leisure Centre in Cwmbran, Wales, may close its doors to the local community in a cost-cutting venture by Torfaen County Borough Council.
The regeneration overview and scrutiny committee has proposed making budgetary cutbacks in the county’s leisure provision by increasing fees, reducing staffing levels and closing the catering service at Fairwater.
An external review of operations at the leisure facility will also be carried out by May, which could result in the closure of Fairwater to the community.
Fairwater High School, which is adjacent to the sports centre, will continue to access the facilities, which comprise a 25m swimming pool, a sports hall, squash courts and a fitness suite.
The council has also promised to safeguard the interests of the 15 sports and leisure clubs in the area that currently use the facilities, but whether this means access to Fairwater is unclear.
