Damian Collins, the Conservative MP for Folkestone and Hythe, has been elected as the chair of the Culture Media and Sport Select Committee.

Collins has been chairing the committee on a temporary basis since his predecessor Jesse Norman was handed a ministerial role at the Department of Business following the appointment of Theresa May as prime minister.

He won 302 votes, beating the 230 votes cast in favour of his Conservative colleague and former sports minister Helen Grant.

The Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee is currently presiding over a number of high-profile sports inquiries, including the governance of football, sport stadia accessibility, homophobia in sport and the future of FIFA.

Collins has been an MP since May 2010.
