England Netball’s flagship participation programme has improved the physical wellbeing of 97 per cent of people taking part, according to new research.

The governing body’s Back to Netball scheme has engaged more than 60,000 participants since its launch in 2009.

Research conducted by Liverpool’s John Moores University has identified some of the benefits of the initiative after surveying some of the participants.

As well as physical health, Back to Netball has improved the social wellbeing of 86 per cent of those taking part, and the mental wellbeing of 76 per cent of participants.

“Of all these netball returners, 89 per cent engage in further activity – 37 per cent in netball and 52 per cent in other sports and activities,” said an England Netball statement.

“This means former Back to Netball participants are now 20 per cent more physically active after attending Back to Netball sessions.”
