English Heritage to cut grants 'by a third'
English Heritage has announced that it will reduce grant funding by 'around one third', following the government's Comprehensive Spending Review.
The organisation currently receives £136m in funding each year from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) but is now facing a 32 per cent cut to that settlement. According to English Heritage, it "cannot yet go into detail" over how cuts will impact on its funded organisations but said that all existing commitments will be protected.
The agency also vowed to protect its planning advice service for local authorities; its designation service and the maintenance of properties it has a responsibility to care for. However, 200 posts are expected to be lost across all its services. An English Heritage spokesperson said: "English Heritage will shortly publish a Corporate Plan which will give greater detail and explain how we will manage the next four years.
"The cuts imposed on us have required extremely difficult choices but we are determined to fulfil our responsibilities and see our heritage flourish as much as possible."
