Enterprise award for London Eye
The Queen's Awards for Enterprise 2003 recently announced include the name of Marks Barfield Architects, designers of the outstandingly innovative London Eye.
Situated on the south bank of the River Thames adjacent to Westminster Bridge, the observation wheel - at 135m the world's highest - has become one of the UKs most popular tourist attractions since its opening in 2000.
The awards scheme is divided into three sections: International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development.
A winner in the International Trade category was Trinity International Services of Aberdeen, which specialises in offshore and remote-site catering and hotel-keeping services.
In addition to the London Eye, winners in the Innovation category included ACIS of Loudwater, Buckinghamshire for developments in satellite-based real time information for passenger transport users and operators, and Antenna Audio of London for technology in the self-guided audio tour market.
Stylographics of Watford also appeared amongst the Innovation winners, for designing display and point-of-sale graphics to the exhibition, museum and retail sectors.
The Sustainable Development awards - which was a list of just 10 names, compared with over 50 for each of the other two categories - included recognition of the Seaview Hotel & Restaurant in the Isle of Wight, for environmental good practise in waste recycling and the sourcing and developing of local produce.
