Eurostar smashes British rail speed record

The UK rail speed record has been decisively broken by a Eurostar train which reached 208mph on an unopened section of the new Channel Tunnel rail link in Kent.
The record was set on the third of three runs between Ashford and Gravesend, where speeds of 186, 168 and then 208mph were recorded.
When the new line opens at the end of September, journey times from London to Paris and Brussels will be cut by 20 minutes. Further reductions can be expected when the second stretch of the line, between North Kent and St. Pancras in London, opens in 2007.
The UK’s previous rail speed record was 162.2mph, set in December 1979 by the tilting Advanced Passenger Train (APT). Details: www.eurostar.com
