FAW submits National Football Centre plans
Plans for the construction of a new purpose-built training facility in Newport, South Wales, have been submitted to the local authority by the Football Association of Wales (FAW).
Newport International Sports Village (NISV) has been identified as the site for the scheme, which will also involve Newport City Council and the Welsh Football Trust (WFT).
A dedicated facility for all FAW and WFT representative squads is earmarked as part of the development, along with a Centre of Excellence for coach education and sports science.
The project will include education space; WFT football development headquarters; and the provision of training facilities for international and professional teams visiting Wales.
Under the plans, alterations would be made to the rear of the existing NISV velodrome to provide storage space, while an existing artificial turf pitch will be converted to grass pitch.
A grass pitch will undergo improvements to form a new artificial pitch and grass pitch, with a spectator stand and floodlights also planned. A skate park would be demolished.
Earlier this year, FAW chief executive Jonathan Ford said: "It has taken us 18 months from agreeing the principle of developing a National Football Centre to deciding that NISV is an ideal site location."
