Football League reports fall in attendances
The npower Football League has announced that more than 16 million supporters attended matches during the 2010/1 season, despite a 6 per cent fall compared with the previous year.
It is the seventh consecutive season in which total attendance numbers surpassed 16 million, although the npower Championship reported a fall of 3 per cent to an average of 17,389. npower League One crowds were down by 18 per cent to an average of 7,527, but npower League Two saw an increase of 8 per cent - an average of 4,162 fans per game.
Greg Clarke, chair of the npower Football League, said: "Given the difficult economic climate, it is heartening to see League crowds reaching the sixteen million mark, once again. "However, we have to be realistic about the challenges we face as it is unlikely that the state of the economy will improve in the near future."
