Fun sports sessions aimed at improving the health and activity of the 35-55s are to be offered in Doncaster in a new initiative created by The Football League Trust (FLT) and Sporta.

The latest in a range of community schemes piloted by sports, and in particular football clubs, Moving Together sees Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust team up with Club Doncaster to try and engage with 300 people in the 35-55 age bracket - a group seen as notoriously difficult to reach.

The £15,000 scheme is being funded by Sport England’s lottery allocation and will initially offer football, badminton and cricket on a fun, non competitive basis and organised by Club Doncaster’s coaches. The aim is for the 12 week programme to become slightly more competitive with mini leagues and cross-site competitions held at four venues in Doncaster.

Sporta, the body which represents leisure and cultural community trusts across the UK, has already distributed funding to 30 charitable leisure trusts under its Make Your Move programme.

Club Doncaster is the foundation which links Doncaster Rovers and the town’s rugby league club. It is one of a number of club-led organisations across the UK to benefit from the FLT’s community work, which tackles social issues such as health, education and crime through the network of trusts associated to the 72 clubs in the Football League.

Sporta will roll out a third round of funding in early 2015.
