Government confirms non-EU workers limit
Home Secretary Theresa May has confirmed that the number of non-European Union (EU) workers permitted to enter the UK will be limited.
The annual limit will enable 21,700 skilled workers to enter the country - including 1,000 under an 'exceptional talent' route. Occupations in Tier Two of the points-based system - for skilled workers with a job offer, such as teachers and nurses - are now required to be at graduate level.
May said: "We have set out an approach which will not only get immigration down to sustainable levels but at the same time, protects those businesses and institutions which are vital to our economy. "We have also made clear that as the recovery continues, we need employers to look first to people who are out of work and who are already in this country."
British Hospitality Association (BHA) deputy chief executive Martin Couchman said: "By insisting that all entrants under the scheme are at graduate level, [the new regulations] will effectively close the scheme to skilled ethnic chefs. "We are continuing discussions with the Home Office and will seek to impress upon ministers the need for flexibility, so that ethnic restaurants – which are a key sector of the tourism economy – are able to expand and develop with the skilled staff that they need."
