Grand National and FA Cup could top betting records
Bookmakers are predicting that this weekend will see the largest turnover ever during one day of betting.
The FA Cup semi-final between Arsenal and Manchester United is expected to raise around £30m in stakes, while the Grand National – the most popular gathering of the year -– could see around £180m been waged on its horses.
Combined, the two will almost certainly break the daily record by topping the £200m barrier.
Many bookmakers have provided their shops with extra staff for the day.
Meanwhile, a specialist police force will protect online bookmakers being blackmailed by hackers during the run-up to Saturday.
Hackers cost betting companies millions during the Gold Cup in Cheltenham last month, after overloading their websites and making betting online impossible.
