Penistone Gymnastics Club in South Yorkshire has received a donation from sports trust Barnsley Premier Leisure to increase the number of classes it offers from an hour a week to four.

The club was also presented with an additional grant of £3,748 through the Awards for All scheme and funds from Penistone Round Table and the Mayoress of Penistone Charity.

The club has used the cash to buy new equipment, including a competition beam, asymmetric bars, a vaulting horse, exercise floor, a springboard and crash mats.

Penistone Gymnastics’ head coach, Gemma Hirst, said: "A lot of hard work has been put in by the gymnasts, their families and charity trusts to help raise the funds for this equipment.

“We can now take the club to a new level and start to compete on a regional basis.

“Already we have seen a marked improvement in the development of the gymnasts, winning four medals in the recent Barnsley Gymnastics competition.”

James Starbuck, chief executive of Barnsley Premier Leisure, said: “This donation is part of Barnsley Premier Leisure’s ongoing commitment to developing sporting potential in Barnsley.

“By improving the facilities and making them more accessible to young people, we will hopefully aid the development of gymnastic stars from the town, whilst also providing opportunities for regular exercise and a healthier lifestyle.”
