The Wales National Velodrome in Newport, an Olympic standard indoor cycle track, has seen the installation of a Nor-Ray-Vac continuous radiant tube heating system from Ambi-Rad.

Part of the Newport International Sports Village - which includes the Newport Football and Athletics Stadium, a tennis centre, squash and Astroturf facilities and, from January next year, a new competition swimming pool - the main cycling arena has twelve badminton courts in the centre of the track, calling for a flexible, economical system capable of heating by zone.

Designed and built for Newport City Council by the Cardiff office of engineering contractors Lorne Stewart, the spec requested radiant tube heating to provide background heat in the 7,500sqm open arena and seating area, at a constant 18 and 20 degrees respectively.

With the Velodrome Centre being divided into five separately controlled heating zones - allowing just one court to be heated if that is the only one in use - a total of 16 Nor-Ray-Vac burners, each with an output of 46kW, were installed above the track and badminton courts of the main arena, with the seating area being warmed by three 35kW Ambi-Rad linear radiant tubes.
