Heritage lottery funding to restore London's Coliseum
The English National Opera (ENO) is receiving £10.65m from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the restoration of the Grade II listed Coliseum.
The funding will enable renovation work on the terracotta façade and refurbishment of the 2400 seat auditorium. A glass roof will also be re-instated over the Terrace Bar and a new public gallery space will be created.
Liz Forgan, chair of the Heritage Lottery said: 'The HLF is committed to developing new audiences and the enhancement of the Coliseum's front of house will enable a diverse range of events - ranging from educational workshops to recitals - to be offered to both established and newer visitors.'
The schedule of works has been planned over a four-year period to ensure minimum disruption to ENO's ability to maintain a full programme of work.
The Barbican will be the opera company's base for part of October and December this year while renovation work is undertaken.
Completion is scheduled for the Coliseum's centenary year in 2004. Details: www.eno.org
