A new international design challenge has been launched this month, inviting freelance designers in the themed entertainment to pitch their concepts for the next immersive, story-based experience.

Created by Storyland Studios, the competition will look to unearth the "next generation of storytellers" by allowing them to showcase their talents.

The challenge will look for ideas that demonstrate design innovation, "depth and richness of Storytelling" and creative use of materials.

The concepts will also need to be "doable", have ecological compatibility and present emotional resonance – in order for people to act.

The winner of the challenge will receive US$20,000 and have the opportunity to pitch their project to industry veterans.

Every entry will be given the opportunity to feature on a dedicated Storyland Design Challenge website, before being assessed by a panel of visitor attraction industry leaders.

The panel includes the likes of Michael Mack, CEO of German theme park Europa Park; Andreas Andersen, CEO and President of the Liseberg Group; and Disney Imagineer Doris Hardoon.

"We’re inviting the next generation of storytellers to showcase their talent," said Mel McGowan, CEO of Storyland Studios.

The deadline for entries has been set for 4 June 2021 and those wanting to take part can register for the challenge by clicking here.

The three finalists will eventually be invited to present their concepts during this year’s Storyland Innovation Webinar. In addition to this, all participants will benefit from a one-year subscription to the Kitestring virtual training platform.
