July opening for National Football Museum
The National Football Museum (NFM) has revealed that it will open at its new Manchester home on 6 July, following the attraction's relocation from Preston's Deepdale stadium.
Cheshire-based Mather and Co secured the design contract for the museum last September, which included work on all aspects of its content, lighting, graphics and 3D structures.
Now housed at Manchester's Urbis centre, the museum will boast a permanent gallery and an audio-visual theatre, as well as retail and hospitality facilities.
Among the items to go on display at NFM will be the shirt worn by referee Howard Webb during the 2010 World Cup Final and the European Cup Winners' Cup trophy.
NFM director Kevin Moore said: "Our new museum will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with the most impressive collection of football exhibits ever assembled."
Manchester City Council's Mike Amesbury said, "Mention Manchester to anyone around the world and one of the first things they will think of is football, so it's the perfect location for a must-see shrine to the global game."
VisitManchester's Paul Simpson added: "This world-class cultural attraction will be a welcome addition for the city's excellent tourism industry, which currently generates £5.8bn for the local economy."
