Leicestershire waterways consultation extended

A consultation to gather feedback on a new emerging strategy for the regeneration of the River Soar and Grand Union Canal in Leicestershire has been extended until the end of the month.

The study, which has been funded by the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA), offers an assessment of current issues and future opportunities, with recommendations for short and medium term options that will help secure the long-term future of the waterways. Plans outlined in the strategy include linking walkways and cycle routes such as the Great Central Way with towpaths, as well as the provision of a continuous footpath between Loughborough and Leicester.

Increased water-based activities are also proposed, including the provision of a matchday water bus service for Leicester City Football Club and Leicester Tigers Rugby Football Club supporters, with the possibility of also extending it to incorporate a water restaurant facility. The strategy is being managed by a steering group comprising representatives from local councils and agencies, including Leicestershire County Council, the Environment Agency, Leicester Regeneration Company and British Waterways. The group is chaired by The Waterways Trust.

Andy Reed MP helped launch the consultation on 5 December. He said: "I believe there is more potential in using our waterways between Leicester and Loughborough. Recent developments like the Wharf and Pillings Lock show what can be achieved. "As well as local statutory bodies, I would like to urge members of the public to give their views. We, after all, will be the users."
