Carn Brea Leisure Centre, Cornwall's first Charitable Trust leisure centre, has re-appointed its chairman and vice chair and strengthened the board with the appointment of two new trustees, at its recent AGM.

Jeff Marston, who is the CEO at the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, will continue as the charity's chair, with Colin Rowe, formerly Managing Director at Cornish Linen Services, remaining the trust's vice chair.

Members also elected two new trustees, with Jane Acton and Mark Smith joining the existing board. Jane who runs Nature Workshops, a local social enterprise, has been using the centre since it opened in 1973 and Mark Smith, an executive director for Plymouth University, has a long association with the centre stretching back to his previous role at CPR Regeneration.

During a well attended meeting, Mr Marston appraised members that in the short term the trust was 'holding its own' in the difficult economic climate, with more of the community using the facility than ever before and costs being reduced with a continued program of energy efficiencies.

Mr Marston went on to update on the trust's longer term aspirations for a new or refurbished Centre saying: "It is early days, but we are pleased to be working in partnership with Cornwall Council in exploring opportunities to develop on land that it owns, and which we currently lease and occupy.

"We are reassured that fundamental to any proposals, will be the ability to maintain and enhance the leisure centre and athletics track within the Camborne, Pool, Redruth area.

"We look forward to continued dialogue with the Council moving forward, as we continue to look at a range of solutions to ensure the vital facilities our charity provides the communities of Camborne, Pool and Redruth are sustained in the long term."

Mr Marston closed the meeting by adding that he was delighted with the appointment of two highly experienced and skilled trustees at such an important and exciting time for the Trust, before thanking all members for their attendance.
