Lung exercise class pilots in UK
The Tunbridge Wells Sports & Indoor Tennis Centre is one of 10 sites in England selected to pilot a study into lung exercise classes.
Participants from the centre’s Breathe Easy respiratory patient group – organised by the British Lung Foundation and run by the fitness staff to improve patients' lung capacity – will take part in the six- month study.
The aim of the study is to develop a model for a typical lung exercise support class and investigate the impact of the programme on people with lung disease.
Patients will receive an initial assessment by a health professional and a full assessment with specific, measurable tests, by a fitness instructor before starting the study. The tests will be repeated after the first eight weeks and at the end of the programme. The study itself will be conducted through a weekly exercise class run by a qualified fitness instructor.
The study, funded by the Department of Health, will run until the end of this year. With a minimum of 12 patients in each class across the ten sites, this should provide a sample of 240 patients at any one time over the six months. The results of the programme will be made available to health care professionals, policy makers, lung disease patients and the general public.
