Plans for the development of a major new multi-sports arena adjacent to Pride Park Stadium in Derby have been submitted by Derby City Council's (DCC) project manager, Mace.

FaulknerBrowns Architects have designed the 14,500sq m (156,077sq ft) complex, which will feature a 250m indoor cycling track and a 1.5km (0.9-mile) outdoor closed cycle trail.

A sports infield capable of accommodating 12 badminton courts and hospitality facilities are also proposed, while the new arena will have a capacity of 5,000 for cultural events.

The complex is to be built on the site of the existing park and ride facility, which will lead to 600 new spaces being created between the new arena and the football stadium.

Mace project director David Grose said: "We have designed an iconic building which will compliment Pride Park Stadium, but will also function as a stand-alone facility.

"The sculptured form will be very striking, exhibiting fluidity and movement to reflect the activities taking place inside."

DCC director of leisure and culture Claire Davenport added: "The multi-sport arena will provide the city with fantastic modern facilities to be proud of and will form part of our lasting Olympic legacy for the people of Derby."

The new arena forms part of the local authority's wider £50m programme to improve leisure facilities across the city, with two locations earmarked for a 50m swimming pool revealed in April 2011.
