Mass pub closures caused by lack of housing
More than 650 country pubs are expected to close within the next 12 months due to a 'chronic shortage of affordable housing', according to a coalition of industry groups.
The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has joined up with the National Housing Federation and the Rural Shops Alliance to highlight the number of pubs closing down in rural areas. The BBPA estimates 54 country pubs could close each month if current trends continued. According to BBPA figures, more than 600 pubs were forced to close last year. The shortage of housing could also make it increasingly difficult for pubs and shops to find local workers who can survive on modest wages.
The campaign groups are calling upon local council to draw up action plans to address the housing needs of their communities. The National Housing Federation said the mass closures reflect a declining demand for village services where local families have been priced out of the area by an increase in commuters and second homeowners.
