Merthyr Tydfil pool 'safe' after bug outbreak
Health officials have ruled that a swimming pool at the Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre in Wales, which was at the centre of a recent outbreak of the cryptosporidium bug, remains safe to use.
The National Public Health Service for Wales (NPHS) said that an independent water expert had carried out tests on the pool to ensure public safety, after around 30 adults and children attending a pool party two weeks ago experienced illness. Eight of those in question have been confirmed as contracting the cryptosporidium bug, with the NPHS and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council immediately launching an investigation into the cause of the outbreak.
A NPHS spokesperson said: "The pool has since been inspected by an independent water expert who is satisfied that the systems are working. After careful risk assessment the pools remain open. "We are working with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council to continue to investigate the situation and ensure that all necessary action is taken."
