Merthyr pool reopens after bug outbreak
Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre's main swimming pool has reopened to the public, following an investigation into an outbreak of the cryptosporidium illness at the facility.
The multi-agency Outbreak Control Team has now ruled that the centre's main pool can reopen, although work is still being undertaken to ensure the leisure and learner pools can reopen by the end of November. Dr Gwen Lowe, consultant in Communicable Disease Control for the National Public Health Service for Wales (NPHS) for Wales, said: "The Outbreak Control Team had agreed a range of measures in response to the situation which have now been completed for the main pool.
"Our priority is to protect public health and so we will only advise on the reopening of the leisure and learner pools once work has been completed." On 7 September, the NPHS ruled that the pool facilities at the centre were safe after 20 confirmed cases of the illness were linked to a pool party held in mid-August.
An independent water expert conducted tests on the water to ensure the safety of the public, but eight new cases of the cryptosporidium bug were confirmed in adults and children who used the pool between the end of August and early September.
