Merthyr to develop leisure complex
Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is set to develop a new leisure complex in Rhydycar, Wales.
The development will include a new leisure centre comprising three swimming pools – a 25m, six-lane pool; a learner pool; and a leisure pool with waterslides – as well as a main hall with an adjacent multi-purpose area, three squash courts and a 50-station fitness suite with a separate free weights area.
The centre’s health suite will feature a sauna, steamroom, spa bath and relaxation area.
In addition, the new complex will contain a nine-screen cinema, a tenpin bowling venue, a 60-bed hotel, a family public house, restaurants and cafés.
There will also be a skate park and a children’s play area.
Atlantic Property Development (APD) will start work on site in January.
Council leader Harvey Jones said: “The development promises to be a major flagship tourist and leisure attraction for the region. It has the potential to create economic benefits and job opportunities and will help achieve our vision for the county borough, which is to be recognised as a vibrant, thriving regional centre for the valleys by 2010.” Details: www.merthyr.gov.uk
