Middlesbrough set for new wheel attraction
A new 40m (131.2ft) wheel attraction could be established in the centre of Middlesbrough, north east England, if the local authority approves plans put forward by World Tourist Attractions (WTA).
Middlesbrough Council's planning and development committee will meet on 9 April to decide on the proposals, which would become the latest addition to WTA's wheel locations, having operated similar attractions across the world. Situated in the town's Centre Square, the wheel would be the only one of its kind operating in the north east region, and will feature 30 glass-sided observation pods capable of accommodating five people each.
Plans for the wheel will see it remain in place for an initial six months at no cost to the council, who will then decide whether to renew its stay for a longer period. The wheel will require no foundation work, and WTA will undertake any restoration work to Centre Square when the wheel is removed. Middlesbrough Council's executive member for regeneration and economic development, Dave Budd, said: "Centre Square already has a fantastic reputation across the region and beyond as a place for great art and entertainment, or simply somewhere to enjoy a stroll or relax.
"This latest proposal will add a new dimension to the Square and will certainly attract new visitors to the town."WTA's planning manager, Max Carlish, added: "Having previously operated in some of the world's leading locations including Belfast, Brisbane, Brussels, Glasgow, London, Manchester, Paris, Perth, Singapore and Windsor, we are excited at the possibility of adding Middlesbrough to this distinguished list."
